Metallurgical testing
SONATS is equipped with all the means and tools necessary for metallurgical controls and expert analyses.
This equipment is distributed between the Carquefou laboratory and the local partners of the SONATS projects.
These investigative methods can be used to complete comprehensive expert analyses, in particular in addition to residual stress measurements and dimensional controls.
Cutting, mounting, polishing, etching
Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), EDX analysis, image analysis
Vickers and Knoop microhardness, Vickers macrohardness
Examples of metallurgical testings: macrographic control, thickness, phase proportion, defects and porosity observations, microstructure, coating thickness, decarburisation depth, inclusion analysis, hardness before/after treatment, quench and treatment depth, weldment controls, chemical analysis, diffusion study, concentration profile, fracture surfaces analysis, corrosion, cracking, etc.
Conventional XRD, grazing incidence XRD, synchrotron XRD, in situ XRD under temperature control and mechanical stress
Examples of metallurgical testings: to ensure that a product conforms to the required crystallography, to quantify the phase proportions, coating and thin layer structures, identification of precipitation hardening in alloys, evolution of phases in the heat affected zones of welds, etc.
